Hi I’m Costa, I’m a second year PhD student. Hopefully by now most of you guys have seen me around and have had the pleasure of reading my slightly unhinged 3am emails about fresher’s week. I’ve been doing the social sec job unofficially for a while now and organised and ran quiet a lot of fresher’s week. I’ve got plenty more planned including a bop, more accommodation brunches, MCR parties, themed formals as well as some more quiet games nights. It’d be great to carry on the job for the remainder of the year.

Hi everybody, if you haven’t already met me, my name is Cloé Legrand – shortish, brown haired, blue eyed, freckled – South African. I am a first year PhD student with a passion for Chemical and Biotech Engineering…and Lola Lo’s. Originating from Cape Town, I love the outdoors, having Braai’s (BBQ’s) and sundowners (G&T’s), instagramming sunsets and having a “lekker jol”(awesome party). Additionally, I did an MPhil here in 2014/2015, so this is not my first Cambridge rodeo. My MPhil year at Clare was exceptional, and the MCR played a huge role in introducing me to truly amazing people and many lifelong friends, and shaping our year together through a wide variety of adventures. I would be thrilled to help facilitate equally exceptional experiences for every member of the MCR, both old and new.

Being a part of the Clare MCR is a vital part of making your time at Cambridge as memorable as possible. Be it tea parties, picnicking at Grantchester, historical tours, pub quizzes, supporting your favourite sports teams, playing with puppies, partying in the Clare cellars, going on swaps with other colleges, themed formals – whatever your interests, Clare MCR can provide for you. We are a family and a friendly one at that! I would like to be a part of making the MCR as fun and inclusive as possible. I hope to expand on the great Fresher’s week we have had thus far, thanks to Natalie and Costa, and help organise events for every interest and cultural background.

In my time at Clare, I have met a multitude of bright, creative, and vibrant people. And I want to get to know you all better. I want to show you a good time. My aim is to make the MCR as approachable as possible whilst integrating activities with other colleges. Clare is your new home, so whether your idea of a good time is chilling in the MCR with coffee and good book or partying it up on a Friday night, I want to be a part of making it better. I would like to hear what YOU want and what YOU enjoy. Together we can create a community which hosts a diverse array of events and caters to all student’s interests and talents.

Pavlo Shopin

Hi, I am Pavlo, a third-year PhD student exploring metaphor in German literature and playing some squash and tennis with friends in my free time. I would like to serve for the MCR community as the library officer. This way I could contribute to the graduate student community and keep you informed about the library matters. I have been using the Forbes Mellon Library for three years, and I think I now have the knowledge and expertise to do something good for the library and the MCR. Also I think book fetishism is the best. I will be around in Cambridge all the time this academic year, so it will be easy to contact me and meet me any time you need it. If you have any concerns about the library use, it will be easy to find me and I will voice your concerns. I have the time and motivation to serve as the library officer and also during tennis, so if you want to play tennis, please get in touch, too. And of course, please explore the college library when you have time. Among many other cool things, they have a nice collection of films on DVD. As a library officer, I will learn even more about the library and share it with you over email, tea or any other medium you like. Please vote for me.

Lachlan Fleetwood

Hey All, for those that don’t know me, I’m a second year PhD in History/HPS, working on science and indigenous knowledge in the Himalaya. Those who have met me will know I can usually be found loitering in the MCR drinking coffee, occasionally serving adult beverages at the bar and more often than seems necessary explaining that I’m not from New Zealand.

I think I would make a good Library Officer for the MCR, and have pretty extensive experience in the area. During undergraduate back in Australia, I worked for the university library for three years, and then for an additional year after my MA as a Senior Library Assistant. In the later role, as well as collections management, I provided research help, and taught undergraduates and graduates how to access and use library resources, including discovery tools and citation software. My research also means I am (seemingly never-endingly) making use of the libraries and archives here in Cambridge, both physical and digital.

My main goals in this position would be to liaise with the Clare librarians on your behalf, arrange visits to the Clare Fellows Library for those interested (which, among other things, holds two first edition copies of Newton’s Principia) and ensure that graduates are able to get the most of the FML (which can sometimes feel like a pretty undergraduate-dominated space).

Beyond that, I realise that the official duties and remit of the Library Officer are rather slim, and am running because this position would also allow me to help out with all the other great work of the MCR committee.

Christy Mc-Morrow

Hi MCR members! I’m Christy and I’m a new MPhil student in Philosophy, (and new to Cambridge!) Having been Students’ Union President as an undergraduate at Sheffield, I care passionately about student representation and want to get involved in the MCR to help make our students’ lives better and put my experience in representing students to good use at Clare.

Given the high rates of mental health difficulties in both young men and postgraduate students in general, the role of Male Welfare rep is an important one to have, and I hope to be a approachable, friendly face for any MCR member who is struggling, or could do with better help from the college. I would also hope to work closely with the other Welfare reps to tackle any major welfare issues our members are facing, particularly seeking to hear the perspectives of LGBT+, disabled and Black and Minority Ethnic students, in relation to how their identities impact on their life and welfare at Clare.

Whether you elect me or not to this position, I hope to get to know all of you well over the course of the year!
