MCR Sports

Most graduate students at Clare are keen to develop interests outside academic work and for many of them, sports is on top of their list. While several university sports clubs exist at Cambridge, many Clare MCR students like to participate in college sports, which is often more informal and in many ways closer to home. Below you find an overview of sports teams that currently exist at Clare. All of them would love to see you join their teams…!

Clare Badminton

All new faces are welcome, including beginners, advanced players and anything in between!

Contact Simon Cheng (yc408) for more information.

Clare Boat Club

Clare has a large, competitive and friendly boat club, with its own boathouse a few minutes away from College. Graduate students have been a significant part of the rowing community and MCR students are always more than welcome to join, regardless of skill or past experience.

For more information, please see the boat club’s website, join the facebook group or contact captain Ariane Dupas (ad792)

Clare Chess

The club generally meets one evening per week during term, in a meeting room in Old Court. The evenings are very casual, and all abilities are welcome. Feel free to come along as often as you please – there is no commitment required. The club participates in the university league, a great opportunity for more competitive chess playing. Aside from standard chess, we play many variants and other fun board games.

Contact Daniel Hurt for more information.

Clare Croquet

Clare college has croquet gear that can be signed out at the porter’s lodge at Memorial Court. The game is usually played on the green in front of the Memorial Court lodge.

Clare Football (Ladies)

For women’s football, contact captain Laura Minoli (lbm27) for more info or join the facebook group.

Clare Football (Mens 1st XI)

Clare College 1st XI is open to all players at Clare.

Contact captain Ollie Lerway (ol259) or join the facebook group for more info.

Clare Gym

We have a small gym at the Clare College “Colony”, that is available for students all year round. It is neither big, nor fancy, but it is free and quite a few students appreciate having treadmills, some aerobic exercise equipment and a couple of free-weights around. If you would like to use it, please book an induction session with the MCR Sports Officer to get access. The gym is open daily from 7 am until 11 pm. If you would like to use more professional equipment and are willing to pay a membership fee, the University Sports Centre may be worth looking in to. Alternatively, we have access to the gym at Bentley Road, all you need to do is get the key from Old Court porters lodge and remember to sign in when you arrive.

Clare Hockey

Clare has a men’s and women’s hockey team that play in a league in the first and second terms of the year. There’s also a mixed team which plays in the college knock out tournament “Cuppers” once a year.

For more info about men’s hockey contact captain James Winter (jacw4) or join the hockey facebook group. Contact captain Rhea Gupta (rsrg2) for info about Ladies Hockey or join the facebook group.

Clare Mixed Lacrosse

Clare Mixed Lacrosse Club competes in the intercollegiate lacrosse tournament, which runs in Michaelmas and Lent terms. Our matches are normally played on Saturday mornings and are always over in time for a team trip to brunch. The year culminates in the one-day Cuppers tournament at the end of Lent. Clare has been in the top league for the past couple of years and we are hoping to maintain this standard! New players of any experience and standard are welcome throughout the season. If lacrosse itself isn’t enough to tempt you, all players are welcome at our infamous termly socials.

Contact captains Izzy McGill (im428) or Jack Langan (jl942) or join the facebook group for more info.

Clare Ladies Netball

Clare ladies netball is a team open to all female members of the college. We play against other colleges on a weekly basis, usually on the weekends.  Netball is a really fun and sociable sport and a great way to meet other people in college, be it at matches, training or socials with other Clare teams. We welcome anyone and everyone, regardless of whether you are already a keen netballer or have never thrown a netball before!

Contact captain Abbie Currington (ac2061)  for more information or join the Clare Netball facebook group to find out about weekly fixtures.

Clare Mixed Netball

Mixed netball matches take place once a week in Michaelmas and Lent Terms. They will tend to be on weekend mornings and we will try to organise one training session a week. No prior netball experience is required and commitment levels needn’t be high. Social events are likely to be organised at fairly regular intervals throughout the year. These socials will most likely vary from intercollege swaps, swaps between other sports teams in Clare and purely team events. Boys who haven’t played netball shouldn’t be put off, no one will judge and this year we have a male captain who hadn’t played before.

For more information, contact the mixed captains Helen Schofield (hrs44) or Ben Barnwell (bb514) or join the Clare Netball facebook group.

Clare Punting

MCR members may book the Clare punts for up to three hours per member. Booking is free and can be done online on this website. Keys can be obtained from the porters at old court, and the poles and cushions are in the alleyway behind the chapel. The MCR and JCR jointly pay for registration and upkeep of our punts. In the last two years we have paid a considerable amount on the restoration of the punts, so please treat them nicely!

Any questions, please contact admiral of the punts Felix Kreis.

Clare Rugby (CCK)

Rugby is one of the largest sports at Cambridge, Clare play in the middle of three college leagues, in a joint team with Corpus Christi and King’s (called CCK). It’s a great way to instantly make friends with lots of people outside of college. Recently Clare has had lots of representation in the University teams, last year five Clare students played at Twickenham against Oxford for the “Under 21″ and “Blues” teams. Graduate students are very welcome to join, no matter their ability or whether they’ve played before. We will ensure that all who want to play will always get game time. We can also promise them the best socials of their lives (and some rugby).

Contact captain Charlotte Spruzen (cs884) or join the facebook group for more info.

Ski Clare

Ski Clare organises a college ski trip in the first week of January each year. The trip is always cheap and is a great chance to get to know more people in college, right through from freshers to graduates.

For more details contact Siling Zhang (sz338) or have a look at the facebook page.

Clare Squash

Squash at Clare is done on a very relaxed basis. If you want to play, feel free to book a court at http://squash.clare.cam.ac.uk/ and collect rackets and balls from the Memorial Court porters lodge (unfortunately equipment cannot be reserved). Courts and equipment are free of charge. We also have two teams, which play in the inter-college leagues and in the college knockout tournament called “Cuppers”. Sometimes we run club sessions for players of all abilities, and if they prove popular again we’ll keep them going this year.

Contact captain Rizwaan Mohammed for more info or join the facebook group.

We hope you are keen to get involved in as many sports as possible. If you have suggestions for the website, or if you would like to find out more about sports at Clare, please do not hesitate to contact the MCR Sports Officer.
