CAMMIGRES Forum, widening participation event
Date and time: Thurs 23rd Oct, 4.30 – 6pm, followed by drinks
Venue: Darwin College, Old Library, Silver Street
The CAMMIGRES Forum is the postgraduate student and early career researcher dimension of the CAMMIGRES – Cambridge Migration Research Network: http://www.cammigres.group.cam.ac.uk/
This widening participation event is for postgraduate students and early career researchers at the University of Cambridge who are interested to find out more about the Cambridge Migration Research Forum http://www.cammigres.group.cam.ac.uk/forum. This is an opportunity to join a community of researchers with diverse migration research interests and to take part in its future development.
Being part of the CAMMIGRES Forum offers opportunities for: involvement in public engagement activities; professional skills development; increasing your personal academic profile; inclusion in workshops and seminars showcasing cross-disciplinary state of the art migration research at the university; participation in the development of migration research programmes; and increasing the profile of migration research at the University of Cambridge.
The aim of the 23rd Oct meeting is to introduce new arrivals to the CAMMIGRES Forum, and to widen participation by engaging postgraduate students and early career researchers with multiple disciplinary interests from a wide range of university faculties, departments and centres.
Please confirm attendance by emailing: cammigres or join the Facebook event here
[NOTICE] CUANZ – Cambridge University Australian and New Zealand Society
If you’re a student from Australia or New Zealand, consider joining CUANZ (it’s free!). We hold a few events each term that allow you to get together with fellow Aussies and Kiwis. On Sunday 19th October we’ll be having our Welcome Party at the Granta (time TBC, see below for how to keep up with us). We’ve also planned a Melbourne Cup cocktail party, Xmas dinner, Australia/Waitangi and ANZAC Day events. There’s even a varsity AFL/Netball match against Oxford’s Australian & New Zealand society at the end of the academic year!

[EVENT] CU Consulting Society Launch Event
Wednesday 15th October
Elton Bowring Room, Memorial Court, Clare College
7:30-8:45pm
Come and learn about the consulting industry, how we can help your application into it and the consulting projects we’re running this year. Last year, our clients included banking and retail giants. There’ll be company presentations from Accenture and Deloitte, followed by networking over canapes and a glass of wine or a smoothy. All welcome. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
[EVENT] Workshop: Delivering Undergraduate Supervision
A workshop on the topic of ‘Delivering Undergraduate Supervision’ will be run by me on Tuesday 22 October at Clare. MCR members will be able to speak with Clare Fellows, College Research Associates and other Clare MCR members, to help support each other with supervisions. Whether you’ve never done any supervising or been doing it for years (or somewhere in between) you should come along. This informal event has been very successful in the past three years, and been appreciated by both experienced and beginner supervisors.
If you are keen to come, please sign up here and answer a few short questions so I can gauge the experience and discipline distribution.
Thursday 30 Oct 2014, 18:30 – 20:00
Bennett Room
Clare Library
Memorial Court
There will also be a ‘Supervising For Complete Beginners’ session from 1730 – 1815 on the same evening in the Glover Room in the Gillespie Centre (Memorial Court), but there is no need to sign up for that.
Best wishes,
Geraint.
Clare College Research Associate
[EVENT] Cambridge RockSoc Rock & Metal Club Night
Cambridge RockSoc is once again holding a regular club night for all rock and metal fans in Cambridge. The night will take place every third Friday of the month at The Q Club, and will feature student DJs playing a range of styles to get the heads banging. It’s also a great place to meet people interested in the same music genres and potential band members. The first night will take place next Friday (17th Oct) at 9pm, and all are welcome even if you’re coming alone – we’re a very friendly society. If you’re not sure where the Q Club is or how to get there, a number of us will be meeting at well known pubs in the city to wander down together. For details please check out the Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/1570558473172596/?source=1).

[EVENT] Cambridge University Women’s Association Football Club trials
CUWAFC will be holding their annual trials this Saturday (11th) between 2-4 at Fitzwilliam Sports Field on Oxford Road. The trials are open to all comers during which two squads (Blues team (1sts) and Eagles (2nds)) are selected. There will be strong competition for places so show up keen to impress. However, there has been a large number of players who have graduated or gone off on years abroad so there are a lot of places up for grabs. Please make an appearance even if you cannot make the whole session or, if you cannot make the session at all, let us know by email and you can be trialed at one of our subsequent training sessions.
All of the information you will need can be found on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CUWAFC?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us:
Blues Captain: Mel Abegglen (mla47)
Eagles Captain: Zoe Woodward (zw286)
First Team Coach: Jon Mackenzie (jrm94)
We look forwards to seeing you there!
[EVENT] Varsity Ski Trip
This years Varsity ski trip will be to Tignes (France) on the 6th-13th December. The base price is £333 which includes travel, accommodation and lift pass. You could say it is the ski world equivalent to the infamous oxbridge boat race where Cambridge will slalom race Oxford, watched by 3,000 oxbridge students who can also enjoy the beautiful scenery, skiing and partying throughout the week.
If you’re a beginner, there’s no cheaper or SNOWcial way to learn; the beginners pack of lessons and ski hire is just £119 and because we all travel as a college and stay in the same accommodation blocks it’s a great way to make friends with others at Clare. If you completely give up, Tignes has sports facilities, spas, shops, ice rinks and Christmassy settings to fill your day.
With previous acts including Rudimental and Katy B, the trip has a partying nature. But you CAN party hard and ski hard as there’s no better cure to a hangover than fresh morning alpine air. In addition, it’ll be early season out of school time, avoiding peak times like most ski holidays so you’ll have plenty of piste space.
If you’re interested please join our college fb group for updates https://www.facebook.com/groups/1408364839437477/.
Booking opens on Wednesday 15th October at 8am for which you’d need to get online early for because places go quickly. So if you’re slightly tempted please have a look around the Varsity website (http://www.varsitytrip.com) and decide whether you’d like to join us and get ready to book on Wednesday ☺
