The University of Cambridge Open Relationship and Non-monogamy Society (UniCORNS), new this term, is devoted to non-monogamy, polyamory, open relationships, or any other member of the huge family of alternative relationship styles. We organize fortnightly alternating discussion groups and socials, open to everyone, regardless of how you do relationships.

Our next meetup is called ‘Identity’. We’ll be considering what it means to identify as preferring alternative relationship styles, and the relationships between it and sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, and other components of our identities. It’ll take place on the 23nd February, 8pm, in the Barbara White Room, Newnham. Latecomers and early leavers welcome! [EVENT] Careers in non-profits – panel discussion

Are you interested in a career in the non-profit sector, but not sure where to start? 80,000 Hours: Cambridge are pleased to welcome Lydia Prieg (Oxfam) and Christine Berry (New Economics Foundation) for a panel discussion. Lydia and Christine will share their own experiences on breaking into this highly competitive sector, and offer advice from their 10 years of experience. Whether you want to find out more about non-profit careers in general or have specific questions, make sure not to miss the event. Christine read Social & Political Sciences at Cambridge, graduating from King’s College in 2008. Starting her career as a parliamentary researcher, she went on to become Head of Policy and Research at ShareAction, a charity which promotes responsible investment by pension funds. Her work was widely credited with triggering a review by the Law Commission, which is ongoing. She is currently a researcher at the New Economic Foundation, a think tank promoting social & economic justice. Her focus in on developing new measures of economic progress which better reflect human well-being, and is working with the EU to move this into the political mainstream. Lydia is a PhD candidate in Land Economy. She consults as a Private Sector Policy Adviser for Oxfam, specialising in the financial sector. Lydia works with NGOs and those in the financial services industry to help restructure the international capital markets to make them more fair, stable and sustainable, with a particular focus on exploring their impact on development. She is also a board member at Move Your Money UK, a national charity campaigning for positive investment. There will be an opportunity to mingle after the event with other students looking to make an impact through their careers, and ask Christine & Lydia any additional questions you might have. I am a PhD student at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. I am currently carrying out a research project related to students’ use of mobile wireless devices such as smartphones, tablet PCs and laptop computers for learning also known as “mobile learning”.

[EVENT] SUMMER OPPORTUNITY: Campus Children’s Holidays – Information Evening

Campus Children’s Holidays is a student run charity which provides holidays each summer for 200 children who are referred to us by Liverpool Social Services and we are currently recruiting volunteers to group lead on our projects this summer. We run 5 residential projects from 25th July to 29th August, each a week long, for children aged from 8 to 13 and a similar non-residential programme for 6 to 8 year olds. The minimum commitment is one week, but you can do more if you want! Activities include swimming, park visits, bowling and an end-of-week trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. All volunteer costs during the week are paid for.

We are particularly keen to recruit DRIVERS, as we cannot run our projects otherwise. If you are aged over 21, have held a driving license for at least 2 years and would be willing to drive a minibus on one of our projects, please get in touch!

Building Bridges in Medical Sciences (BBMS) is hosting its seventh conference organized by graduate students of the Graduate School of Life Sciences.

The conference aims to bring together scientists from different disciplines, career stages and countries and emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches to tackling the biomedical research and global health challenges of the 21st century. This year will feature prominent speakers from various scientific disciplines, such as basic research, clinical practice, public health policy, industrial enterprise and more.

Registration is free for all attendees and includes complimentary lunch and refreshments. This year we will be joined once again by graduate students from abroad. We will also be hosting a poster competition, lunchtime workshops and networking sessions. Anyone interested in giving a short student talk, do get in touch with us with an abstract.
