[EVENT] Make-a-thon for international development in CUED
Dear all,
judging from the festive noises in the department, it seems that many of you are recovering from the stress of the exams!
Ben Merrett (SSJC vice-president) already circulated a Make-a-thon announcement before the exam, but now might be a good time to capture your interest for this event that strongly relates to Engineering, in the context of international development and humanitarian causes.
We are running a relaxed and collaborative Make-a-thon, with the action scattered between 9 June and 15 June.
INSPIRATIONAL INTRODUCTION:
On 9 June in the morning (time tbc), Lara Allen, Director of the Centre for Global Equality, will highlight some of the most urgent issues that your bright brains could try to tackle, such as:
- use of mobile networks to improve emergency response,
- securing water for food,
- improving pneumonia detection,
- and many more.
Two local NGOs, WaterScope and SimPrints, will also tell their stories about how technology can be used to make a difference in the developing world.
CREATIVE TIME IN THE DYSON CENTRE:
On 13 and 14 June, participants will have access to the Dyson Centre, engineering materials and electronic components, technical support and a limited additional budget to try some of their ideas.
The results of the Make-a-thon will be showcased on 15 June at a MakerFaire-type event in CUED. There will be scope to further support promising ideas beyond the Make-a-thon event, so it could be much more than a few days of entertaining engineering!
Participants will work in teams, and be of course free to attend any other May week activity in parallel with the Make-a-thon.
