Cyclists.
Be Safe, Be Bright and Be Seen This Winter
1. Lights and cycle mounted reflectors are a legal requirement. Make sure you have two lights and two reflectors on your bike, red on the back and white on the front, as well as four pedal reflectors.
2. Additional reflectors can be added to your wheel spokes for extra visibility. Use www.camcycle.org.uk/resources/lights to help you. 3. Dress to be seen. Wear reflective and high viz clothing.
4. Get geared up. Wear gloves and water proofs to make your ride more comfortable.
5. Don’t cycle in the gutter. Be wary of leaves, drains, grit, ice, poor surfaces and giving yourself room for movement from close passing vehicles.
6. Plan safe cycle routes. A commute which may have been quiet and scenic during the summer months may not be as desirable in the winter. Find an alternative route using the Cycle Streets journey planner (cyclestreets.net).
7. Take part in cycle training. Even if you’ve cycled for a long time, a one off lesson can help you improve your skills. Email travel@admin.cam.ac.uk if you’re interested in taking part in free cycle training offered by the University.
8. Check your bike. Wet weather can cause your bicycle to deteriorate so make sure it is serviced during the colder months; tyres and brakes, in particular, should be checked regularly. Carry a puncture repair kit in the winter months. Email travel@admin.cam.ac.uk if you’re interested in being on the waiting list for free cycle maintenance workshops offered by the University.
9. Allow longer braking distances in wet and icy conditions.
10. Use the University Map to locate your nearest bike repair station (map.cam.ac.uk/#52.207725,0.101302,15,T:bicyclerepairs).
