[EVENT] EBI-Sanger-Cambridge PhD Symposium (eSCAMPS)

EBI-Sanger-Cambridge PhD Symposium (eSCAMPS) is an annual one-day event for postgraduate students at the University of Cambridge and affiliated institutes. We aim to cover a broad range of topics in biomedical research, including biotechnology and informatics. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday 18th February 2015 at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

FREE registration and abstract submission are now OPEN for all Cambridge PhD students (subject to capacity limits). The deadline for abstract submission is December 19th.

This year, we have invited five fantastic keynote speakers:

• Prof Dame Nancy Rothwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester

• Prof David Colquhoun, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at University College London

• Prof Tony Kouzarides, Deputy Director of the Gurdon Institute

• Prof Simon Tavaré, Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute

• Dr Helen Lee, Director of Research in the Department of Haematology, University of Cambridge

[EVENT] Tickets available for ‘The Mikado’

Tickets are now on sale for The Mikado! The most famous of all Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic masterpieces, ‘The Mikado’ combines biting social commentary with dark gallows humour to tell the story of Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado who disguises himself as a wandering minstrel. Performances are at 8 pm from 19 to 22 Nov, with a matinee performance at 2 pm on 22 Nov, and take place in Robinson College Auditorium. [EVENT] 2014 Cambridge International Development Conference

The I.D.C is an annual student-led conference which aims to bring those working in the field together with academics to discuss key development topics. This year our theme is “Pathways to Development: From Diversity to Sustainability”. Throughout the conference a range of top-level speakers from all parts of the international development field will explore how diversity and sustainability are key to the future of international development, including debates on “voluntourism” and the transition from the Millenium Development Goals to the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.

[EVENT] Cambridge University Pythons- first match of term

Cambridge University Pythons season starts on Sunday! After a 7-1 season last year, we kick off the new season by hosting the Oxford Brookes Panthers on the 16th of November.

Following a great practice scrimmage against ARU two weeks before, the Pythons are ready to take a team on in a proper game. Because teams only play each other once in the season, each game is vital to make it into the playoffs! It will be a great game and we would love to have people supporting the team.

The game is at Coldham’s Common on Sunday, with kickoff at 1pm, The team will be around from 11am for warmups and pre-game rituals, so do come along anytime from then!

[EVENT] Tea Yoga

On next Sunday there will be another ‘tea yoga’ session. This time, we will learn the fourth chapter of Tea Yoga, which is ‘transporting Qi meditation’ （运气观想). We will also go through the earlier chapters of ‘tea facial steaming meditation’ (茶熏得气), ‘Daoyin breathing exercise’ （导引呼吸）, and ‘Supplement of Qi by Fairy Maiden’ (仙女补气). No matter whether you have attended any tea yoga sessions before or not, you are more than welcome to join it this time.

Introduction to tea yoga:

Tea yoga is a system of healthy maintenance practice, created by Zen master Jingyan in recent years based on the traditional method of vapor therapy in ancient China and yoga from India. In the practice, we use tea leaves as the spices in the facial steaming meditation. Tea steam opens the skin’s pores while deeply cleansing and rejuvenating the skin; tea steam comes into the body and helps to open our acupuncture points and channels, clearing blockages, and stimulates the organs to balance themselves, and improve the immune system. During the whole process, you are relaxed and become more aware of your body and yourself. It helps people to release pressure, harmonize the heart, the body, and the affairs in daily life. Especially, for people who work hard at desk, the tea steaming meditation helps to cure the tiredness of the eyes and improve the eyesight, Yoga and Daoyin exercise help to relieve the pain and stress on the shoulders and neck.

[EVENT] Intercollegiate Quiz Championship

The Cambridge University Quiz Society is running its annual quiz competition starting this week. We accept all entries from societies, college university challenge teams or groups of friends that enjoy trivia and would like to get an opportunity to pit their knowledge against other enthusiasts.

The tournament will be a buzzer quiz format with 4 people on each team. In a similar style to University Challenge each starter will be followed by 3 bonus questions. Teams can consist of up to 5 people but only 4 can take part in any individual games.

If you wish to enter a team then email el399 with your name, what college/society/group you are representing and who the people on your team are.

If you do not yet have a full team then let us know and it can be sorted out later. We will also accept individual entries that we can then sort into a team. The deadline for entry is 20th November but the earlier you get back to us the earlier you can start playing. The cost of entry is £10, which goes towards the questions and prizes. The format will be a bracket with winners progressing however high scoring losers will progress as well and we will aim to give all teams at least two games.

Last year 34 teams entered, it’d be great to beat that number this year!

A brand new space to share skills and talk through problems among supervisors, with the aim of considering what ethical teaching looks like, and how to use our supervisor powers for good!

A particular emphasis will be placed on intersectional analysis of power structures in the supervision room – how to make sure everyone can benefit equally from supervisions, taking into account factors of race, class, disability, sexuality, gender identity etc.

There will also be room to share all kinds of supervising concerns (how much time do we spend marking? how can we reach out to students who are struggling while maintaining appropriate boundaries? how to compensate for the holes in faculty training?) and solutions we’ve come up with!

[VOLUNTEERS] Paid volunteers for Tetris study

We are looking for healthy male volunteers to take part in a study on Tetris game and decision making. Experience of Tetris is not required. You will need to attend a 1.5 hour testing session, and you will receive £12 for your involvement with the study, with additional award depending on your performance in the Tetris Game. [EVENT] “Towards One World” An International Law Seminar and Book Launch Reception with His Excellency Judge CG Weeramantry, 21st of November

The Lauterpacht Centre for International law, in collaboration with the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), is hosting an international law seminar and book launching reception with His Excellency Judge CG Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice, Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, and UNESCO Prize for Peace Education Laureate, known especially for his international legal contributions to sustainable development, disarmament and human rights.

The ‘Towards One World’ International Law Seminar will include a keynote speech by HE Judge CG Weeramantry, and a small legal experts panel commenting on progress in international law over recent decades, and the influence of the Judge’s works on sustainable development, human rights, peace and disarmament, through two decades of successive decisions in international treaty negotiations, principles and practice, and dispute settlement.

A special reception to launch HE Judge CG Weeramantry’s new book, Towards One World, will take place directly afterwards in the Old Library and Hall of the Lauterpacht Centre, with light refreshments, champagne and chocolate.

Gog Magog Molly still meet 8-10pm on Tuesdays in the Stoneyard Centre / St Andrews St Baptist Church next to ‘Spoons on, well, St Andrews St (between the front of Emma and Parker’s Piece). Turn up at 8 in the passage between the church and the insurance shop or ring the bell if late and wait for mollies to appear or join us on the lower ground floor in ‘Spoons from about 7 for a pre-Molly meal.

*First term free*. No previous experience required. Wear shoes and clothes suitable for vigorous exercise and raising your knee to a right angle.

We do molly dancing, the traditional* dancing of the fens. It’s like morris dancing but with bright colours, right-angled limbs, stamping and shouting instead of the bells, hankies and sticks that other morris styles use.

[EVENT] Professor Alison Bashford: ‘Global Population: History, Geopolitics and Life on Earth’

The second talk in the Cambridge Humanities Review series ‘Lectures in the Humanities’ will be delivered by the recently appointed Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History Alison Bashford. Her talk will trace the idea of a world population problem from the 1920s in terms of migration, colonial expansion, globalization and world food plans. Professor Bashford’s research connects the history of modern science and medicine, imperial history and environmental history. Representatives of Heffers Bookshop will be in attendance to sell copies of her most recent book Global Population. £5 year annual subscriptions to the CHR magazine will be available to purchase, the next Issue will be published at the end of November.
