[Elections] MCR November by-election
Dear MCR,
One election ends and another begins!
We will be holding a by-election for our two First Year Officer positions on the MCR Committee. More details about the role of these officers are included further down.
If you wish to run for the position of First Year Officer then please let me know by replying to this e-mail no later than Sunday 15th November. If more than two people end-up running, you will need to produce a manifesto. I will let you know if this is the case when confirming your nomination. If you then fail to produce a manifesto on time, I will assume that you have dropped-out of the election and continue without you (so the best idea is to prepare one in advance regardless).

DETAILS ABOUT THE ROLE:
First Year Officers are meant to be the conduit for first-year specific issues, but the main reason for the positions existing is to give first years some representation on the committee and to contribute to more general committee decisions and discussions. It’s a great way to get started with the committee if this is your first year and are perhaps interested in running for a more senior role at the next MCR general election. Alternatively, it can be a great way to make sure the voices of MPhil students are heard, who normally wouldn’t be here long enough to be on the committee otherwise (except Leland).
The work that the role entails will mostly be centred around attending committee meetings, providing the first-year perspective at those meetings and generally contributing to our decisions and efforts to run the MCR throughout the year. This may involve organising events, attending college committees and being a point of contact for people with issues relevant to your role. First Year Officers don’t typically have a heavy committee workload but this year is far from typical, so do bear that in mind.
In previous years, one of these two officers was called the “Swirles” or, before that, the “St Regis” officer and was the representative for that block of accommodation. However, seeing as we don’t have Swirles Court or St Regis at the moment, and the role is normally filled by a first year, we’ve decided to just turn it into a second First Year Officer instead.
LENGTH OF TERM:
Most committee positions have terms that go from April to April. However, the first year officers are different in that they go from November to November, or at least to the end of the academic year if not returning next year.
As always, if you have any questions or comments then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Democratic MCR Love,
Will.
