[EVENT] Where Your Technology Comes From
CUAIxCambridge WikiRate Society Present “Where Your Technology Comes From”
6:30-9:00 PM on Tuesday, May 3, Latimer Room, Clare College, Cambridge
Join Cambridge University Amnesty International CUAI and Cambridge WikiRate Society to help research how companies around the world use minerals that are potentially linked to conflict and exploitation.
Products we use every day — like smartphones, laptops and cars — contain minerals that may have fuelled violence, abuses, and corrupt criminal networks in countries like Afghanistan, Colombia, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
We want to know what companies are doing to ensure they source these minerals responsibly and this is why we need all hands on deck to create a database of their mineral sourcing and usage practices.
We will kick off the event with introductions by experts from Amnesty International UK, The WikiRate Project and others who will be speaking about why responsible sourcing matters. We will then use the WikiRate platform to research companies using publicly available information; generating data that will help us ensure that companies are held to account for abuses they commit.
*****Free pizza and refreshments will be served throughout!!!!*****
