The Cambridge University Students’ Pro Bono Society is holding our first speakers event of the year THIS THURSDAY. Pro Bono work is becoming an increasing important aspect of legal practice, so for any aspiring lawyers the talk should be very useful and insightful. The event “PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES IN A GLOBAL LEGAL PRACTICE” will take place at 7.30 on Thursday 6th November in the Law Faculty (B16). It will start with a talk from lawyers at NORTON ROSE FULBRIGHT followed by opportunities for questions. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Lawyers and Non-Lawyers are both very welcome!

Prof. Carlos Caldas is Professor of Cancer Medicine, Centre Lead for the Cambridge Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) and Director of the Cambridge Breast Cancer Research Unit. He researches breast cancer functional genomics and has recently “redefined breast cancer as a constellation of 10 genomic driver-based subtypes”. This will be a chance to hear from someone at the forefront of cancer research – not one to be missed!

[ADVERT] Non-Musical Ball Performers Wanted

The Cambridge University Royal Naval Unit is holding its 20th Anniversary Ball in Lent Term next year, and with a guest list numbering up to 250 people, we need some entertainment!

Ideally, we want skilled magicians, street performers, mime artists, etc, to perform for between 2 and 4 hours on the night of March 13th 2015. Performance would be non-stage based, amongst the crowds at the venue, indoor and out. Performers can be individuals or small groups. Location is in Cambridge, and the work would of course be paid.

[EVENT] CU Consulting Society and the Young Management Consultancies Association

For those of you unfamiliar with GSS: The Global Scholars Symposium brings together postgraduate students from around the world studying in the UK. It aims to bring scholars together to engage in thought-provoking dialogue, with the help of dynamic speakers who will challenge scholars to think and act in new ways. Across three days of speakers, dialogues, panels, and interdisciplinary workshops we aim to engage and inspire scholars to reflect on what they can do to take a stand to improve their communities.

This year it will be hosted at the Cambridge Union, from 21st-24th May 2015. The theme is “Building Impact: Listen. Learn. Act.”

Previously we have been privileged to host many inspiring speakers, including the Dalai Lama, David Suzuki, Wanjira Mathai, former prime minister Paul Martin, Dr. Mo Ibrahim, Baroness Helena Kennedy, Dr. Joseph Nye, Dominic Barton, and Professor Jeffery Sachs.

[VOLUNTEERS] Summer camp teaching positions available in South China

IVSC is recruiting 70 volunteer teachers for summer camp projects in the idyllic southern town of Yangshuo阳朔 as well as other locations including Changsha, Lingshan and Pingjiang. Lonely Planet says of Yangshuo that “pedalling across the rice fields through Yangshuo’s soaring limestone peaks is often the top experience of travellers in China.” The programme provides free bed and board, free TEFL certification, Chinese classes and some remuneration. Travel scholarships are usually available through universities.

Programmes run from 7th July-15th August TBC with some flexibility. Schedules vary between the different schools but generally involve 3-6 hours of English classes per day followed by outdoor activities. Students are aged between six and sixteen, every week teachers accompany the students on fun summer-camp activities. As an example, activities in Yangshuo include; bamboo rafting, rock climbing, camping, caving, touring rural villages such as Xingping, cycling, swimming in the Li river, tubing, Kayaking, white-water rafting and general sports. Teachers will also assist with other summer camp activities including interviewing foreign tourists in the town centre, cookery classes, film-making, and karaoke parties. There are also ample opportunities to study mandarin, martial arts, or cookery, and to go out in the evenings to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife.

In house TEFL certification, Chinese classes, advice regarding visas, free accommodation and food are all offered. Some schools will be able to remunerate teachers. There is no programme fee of any kind, IVSC has been working with UK students since 2007. [ADVERT] University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute

Our UCCRI Interdisciplinary Conservation Graduate Group is about to start off a new year with an exciting talk by Zac Baynham-Herd from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, ‘Who on Earth cares?’

Our Graduate Group (http://research-institute.conservation.cam.ac.uk/student-group) was set up last year to bring together graduates from across the disciplines within the University, whose research is related to the environment and society. So far researchers have joined us from geography, land economy, social anthropology, HPS, Archaeology and Anthropology, Architecture, Plant Sciences, Zoology and Earth Sciences. The first year of our Interdisciplinary Conservation Group culminated in a Conference, which we held at the Sainsbury Lab, early in September 2014.

We very much welcome graduates from many other disciplines within the arts and humanities, physical sciences and social sciences. If you would like to join the group, you can sign up via the UCCRI website and we hope very much to see you at our
first interdisciplinary conservation talk on Thursday 6th November at 1pm, Room 206 William Hardy Building on the Downing Site
