Open to all graduate students working on the environment and biodiversity conservation within the University of Cambridge

The Interdisciplinary Conservation Research Group is pleased to announce its first Conference on “Inter-disciplinarity in Conservation Research”. The conference will gather graduate students from the University of Cambridge working on conservation research across disciplines.

For the first time, the conference will bring together the Cambridge graduate community working on conservation from a variety of perspectives. It will be a place for open conversation about the key research questions, for sharing knowledge and experiences about methods and fieldwork, as well as to put forward the epistemological and ontological debates taking place across the range of arts and humanities, social and natural science disciplines that are relevant to understand biodiversity conservation and its context.. These disciplines include (but are not limited to) conservation biology, economics, development studies, social anthropology, human geography, sociology, and politics.

Papers on all topics of interest to interdisciplinary conservation research may be submitted for presentation within the conference and will be considered by the scientific programme committee. Electronic copies of abstracts should be sent via the UCCRI website (https://research-institute.conservation.cam.ac.uk/grad-conf) by 10^th of July 2014. Closing date for all other participants is 1st August 2014.

[EVENT] 11th Technology Ventures Conference: Beyond the Now!

Join the Cambridge University Technology and Enterprise Club for its 11th annual Technology Ventures Conference!

The Technology Ventures Conference 2014, titled “Beyond the Now”, features 15 TED style talks from world leading entrepreneurs and technologists. Exploring the impact of technology innovation on the future of our society, the talks will be led by keynote speakers including:

Naveen Jain. Mr. Jain is the founder of three companies – Moon Express, InfoSpace, and currently Inome. He is also the  founder and CEO of the World Innovation Institute, and has an established record as a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and technology pioneer.

Hazel Henderson, D.Sc.Hon., FRSA, is the founder of Ethical Markets Media and the creator and co-executive Producer of its TV series. She is also a world renowned futurist, evolutionary economist and the author of the Axiom and Nautilus award-winning book “Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy” (2006).

Dr Eric Drexler. Dr. Drexler is often described as “the founding father of nanotechnology”. He introduced this concept to the scientific community through a seminal paper in 1981 and a book-length physics-based analysis entitled “Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery, Manufacturing, and Computation”.

[EVENT] CUSPE’s Annual Policy Review at the Royal Society hosted by Cambridge University Science and Policy Exchange

The relationship between evidence and policy is complex and sometimes proves controversial. Policymakers can be heavily criticised if if they are not seen to fully use the available evidence and so are often keen to claim their policies are evidence-based. But within any political or policy decision there are a great number of influencing factors which affect the final integration of ‘evidence’ and outcome. Each year, the Annual Policy Review examine the complexities, and potential barriers to evidence-based policy making.

This year, we will use the suggested minimum alcohol pricing policy as a springboard to explore these issues, discussing factors such as the availability and uncertainty of evidence.

We are delighted to welcome as our speakers:

• Jill Rutter (Chair), Programme Director at the Institute for Government, former senior civil servant in the Treasury, No. 10, and Defra.
• Professor Theresa Marteau, Director of the Behaviour and Health Research Unit at the University of Cambridge.
• Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, Chair of Alcohol Research UK, Honorary Professor of Public Health at Kings College London.
• Dr Peter Rice, Chair of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems, Alcohol Policy Lead for Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK), Past Chair of Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland.
