Varsity Punt Race, Cardboard Boat Race & Darwin Punt Race
Hello everyone,
I hope you’re enjoying the weekend. I thought this notice was worth sending round before the next bulletin. For those of you that haven’t taken part in/ witnessed it before the Cardboard boat race on Suicide Sunday is hilarious!
MCR love,
Clare
Please draw the attention of students at your colleges to the following (updated) information about the Granta Rats’ three exciting events in May Week. Note in particular that we have taken over organisation of the Cardboard Boat Race, and that Facebook events have been created for this and the varsity punt race. All of the information below can also be found here:
VARSITY PUNT RACE
Location: Grantchester Meadows (most northerly meadow)
Date & Time: Wednesday 11th June, 14:30
Cost: free (unticketed)
Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1434786580113876/
This year’s Granta Rats Garden Party will accommodate something a bit different: an epic battle between the finest punters from Cambridge and Oxford. The usual (Pimms-based) light refreshments will also be provided. Everyone is welcome to come along and offer support or just relax and enjoy pleasant company in the meadows. Mark it in your diary, in preference to May Bumps, NOW. Tell everyone you know and even strangers.
The Granta Rats (a.k.a. Cambridge University Punting Society – http://grantarats.soc.srcf.net/index.php) are looking for student volunteers to take part in the race, either as punters or as other team members who will sit in the punts and “help” (probably with kayak paddles). If you (or anyone you know) are a strong punter, or just fancy trying out on the day, email grantarats@cusu.cam.ac.uk to volunteer.
CARDBOARD BOAT RACE
Location: Jesus Green
Date & Time: Sunday 15th June, 14:30
Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/566398110135732
This year the Granta Rats are very excited to be taking over the organisation of one of the highlights of the Cambridge year – the Suicide Sunday Cardboard Boat Race.
The basic premise is simple: get together a team of at least three; build a boat using only cardboard, PVA glue and gaffa tape (any materials are allowed for propulsion and ornamental additions); turn up at Jesus Green and contest for glory.
More details, and conditions for entry to the race, now available on Facebook.
DARWIN PUNT RACE
Location: Darwin Island (finish line is Orgasm Bridge)
Date & Time: Sunday 15th June, 17:30
Cost: £5 per punt to enter the race; this funds the £80 prize for the winning punt!
Event poster: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4tBdrG0_yvaeTRRQUZfQllFS00/edit?pli=1
Every year, Darwin College hosts a dramatic, utterly hilarious and frankly more-than-slightly-dangerous punt race through town from Darwin Island to Orgasm Bridge. Expect chaos, kayak paddles and water balloons.
Whilst the race has usually been primarily populated by Darwin students, they warmly welcome any team which turns up with its own punt; this year, the Granta Rats are hoping to enter a punt or two of their own, and encourage students, especially those at colleges with their own punts, to do the same.
If you’d like to be part of the Granta Rats team, email grantarats@cusu.cam.ac.uk (we’ll be meeting at Mill Backs at around 17:15). If you’d like more information about the event, email Ed Emery, the event organiser, at ed.emery@thefreeuniversity.net.
Many thanks
James Wright
