[AUDITIONS] COOGLES auditions for their September play

It is with great pleasure I announce that there will be a COGGLES show at the end of September in Cambridge of the hour long humorous play called “The Canterville Ghost”, and we are now OPEN for AUDITIONS for anyone (no previous experience necessary)

Audition details are as follows:

• Thursday 4th September – 7pm – 9pm – Music Room, Corpus Christi College
• Sunday 7th September – 2pm – 4pm – Location Jesus Green by the Bridge and Ice Cream Stand

We take shows to old people’s homes, and all our shows/rehearsals (not that we have many) are in the evening or at weekends. We are open to anyone in Cambridge (including undergrads, postgrads, post-docs, PIs, staff, real people, humans, aliens, talking sheep, halves of a pantomime horse, part of an extendable cow etc…). No previous experience required, and we try and make the auditions really friendly – email Miffy and Martin with any questions.

[RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS] Study at Addenbrookes

I am a PhD student over at the Addenbrookes site investigating the properties of naturally occurring substances in human blood vessels and heart and need some healthy volunteers and volunteers with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) for my studies starting in September. These studies would involve a 3 trips to Addenbrookes, 2-3 hours of time each visit, on the first a tiny needle in the elbow, some blood samples and blood pressure measurements and on the second and third, a needle in the arm and measurements of heart function and blood pressure measurements. There is a payment for expenses and time. I would like to recruit as many people as possible – so please contact me via email/telephone.

[EVENT] Steven Pinker Public Lecture on Global Violence Reduction

The World Health Organization and the University of Cambridge Presents ‘Steven Pinker: The Past, Present and Future of Violence’

Renowned experimental psychologist, cognitive scientist, linguist, and popular science author Steven Pinker (Harvard University) will address the widely-held impression that we are living in extraordinarily violent times, when in fact rates of violence at all scales have been in decline over the course of history. The lecture will discuss how human nature comprises faculties that encourage violence, such as dominance and revenge, but also faculties that inhibit it, such as self-control, empathy and reason. Pinker also speculates on how some of the historical processes that reduced violence in the past might help to further reduce violence in the future.

The Canadian-born US academic has been named Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Society and listed in Foreign Policy Magazine’s “The World’s Top 100 Public Intellectuals” and Time’s “The 100 Most Influential People in the World Today.”

The lecture is the public event of the WHO and University of Cambridge Global Violence Reduction Conference 2014 and supported by the UBS Optimus Foundation.
