[VOLUNTEER] SCIENCE OUTREACH – VOLUNTEER WITH THE CHaOS WINTER ROADSHOW

CHaOS (Cambridge Hands-On Science) is recruiting volunteers for its Winter Roadshow, happening on Thursday 4th – Tuesday 9th December (after the end of term for undergraduates). We will be going to Cambridgeshire schools and public events demonstrating our interactive science experiments for children and families, showing them just how interesting science can be.

We need plenty enthusiastic volunteers to demonstrate the experiments, which range from building bridges and explaining why things glow in the dark to looking at creepy crawlies and introducing children to Boris the skeleton. No experience is necessary – each experiment comes with a description of how it works and what to talk about. You can volunteer for just one day, or more if you like, and all you need to bring is yourself and your passion for science.

[EVENT] Cambridge Pythons varsity match

This Sunday (30th November), one of the longest standing and biggest rivalries in sport is being reignited. Cambridge against Oxford.

This time it is the Cambridge Pythons taking on the Oxford Lancers at Varsity Bowl IX. The game is being held under floodlights at the rugby club’s home ground on Grange Road, with kickoff at 4pm. But this is not just going to be an American football game, there will be entertainment both on and off the field.

Apart from the game, there will be cheerleading performances, a halftime pie eating contest, and of course plenty of food and drink at the bar. The game will be announced and commentated on and there will be a gameday programme to get you up to speed with everything that’s going on. Then post-game, the bar will be put to good use before heading into town for the Official Varsity Bowl After Party.

It does not matter if you are the biggest football fan or do not know the rules at all, you will definitely want to see this! Entry is free with a suggested donation.

[ADVERT] IVSC is recruiting

IVSC is recruiting 70 volunteer teachers for summer camp projects in the idyllic southern town of Yangshuo阳朔 as well as other locations including Changsha, Lingshan and Pingjiang. Lonely Planet says of Yangshuo that “pedalling across the rice fields through Yangshuo’s soaring limestone peaks is often the top experience of travellers in China.” The programme provides free bed and board, free TEFL certification, Chinese classes and some remuneration. Travel scholarships are usually available through universities.

Programmes run from 7th July-15th August TBC with some flexibility. Schedules vary between the different schools but generally involve 3-6 hours of English classes per day followed by outdoor activities. Students are aged between six and sixteen, every week teachers accompany the students on fun summer-camp activities. As an example, activities in Yangshuo include; bamboo rafting, rock climbing, camping, caving, touring rural villages such as Xingping, cycling, swimming in the Li river, tubing, Kayaking, white-water rafting and general sports. Teachers will also assist with other summer camp activities including interviewing foreign tourists in the town centre, cookery classes, film-making, and karaoke parties. There are also ample opportunities to study mandarin, martial arts, or cookery, and to go out in the evenings to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife.

In house TEFL certification, Chinese classes, advice regarding visas, free accommodation and food are all offered. Some schools will be able to remunerate teachers. There is no programme fee of any kind, IVSC has been working with UK students since 2007. Dr. Colin Russell is a Royal Society University Research Fellow and focuses on the interface between infectious disease evolution and epidemiology. He has published a number of ground-breaking papers including “The potential for respiratory droplet transmissible A/H5N1 influenza virus to evolve in a mammalian host” (Russell et al., 2012).

Job Description: Several groups of university students from Asia will attend academic exchange seminars (each lasting about 13 or 14 days) in Cambridge in January, February, and March 2015. The programme mainly consists of academic lectures, visits, and social activities, which aims to offer students a taste of studying and living in Cambridge. The position that we are now recruiting includes part time seminar assistants, who will work with a team to accompany students during their 13 or 14 days’ stay in Cambridge. There are 7 time slots available to choose from. Successful applicants can choose any one or more than one time slot from the following:

Slot 1: 21st Jan.—3rd Feb, 2015

Slot 2: 24th Jan.—6th Feb, 2015

Slot 3: 25th Jan.—8th Feb, 2015

The job of seminar assistants includes:

Lectures: assisting to ensure the smooth flow of the lectures, such as preparing lecture rooms, handout, and other materials that the lecturers may need; supervising students’ final presentation.

Visits: assisting to organise and accompany the visits to help students have a happy and safe tour in Cambridge, London and Oxford.

Social activities: organising and actively participating in social activities; communicating with students to help them gain a better idea of studying and living in Cambridge.

Logistics: helping with airport pickup, welcome reception, and so on.

Eligibility:

Cambridge University Members are welcome to apply.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Fluent in English.

Prior experience in event organising is preferred.

Payment: 600 pounds (base salary) + 200 pounds (bonus; depending on the feedback from students and seminar manager)

[EVENT] Professor Anil Seth on “Consciousness: What in the World is it?”

Consciousness is, for each of us, the presence of a world. Without consciousness there is no world, no self: there is nothing at all. But we do not know much about the material and biological basis of this most central feature of our lives. How do rich multisensory experiences, the senses of self and body, and volition, agency, and ‘will’ emerge from the joint activity of billions of neurons locked inside a bony skull? Once reserved within philosophy and theology, the neuroscience of consciousness has emerged as a one of the great scientific challenges for this century. In this seminar I will sketch the state-of-the-art in the new science of consciousness. I will distinguish between conscious level (how conscious we are), conscious content (what we are conscious of), and conscious self (the ‘I’ behind the eyes), describing in each case how new experiments are shedding light on the underlying neural mechanisms, in normal life and in neurological and psychiatric conditions. Throughout, I will emphasize phenomenology – the way things seem – as the target for any satisfying explanation of how the brain, in conjunction with the body and the environment, gives rise to and shapes conscious experience.
