MCR by-elections, 15th Jan 2016
Dear MCR,
We would love for you get involved!
In accordance with our constitution we are opening the following non-executive positions for a by-election to be held on Friday 15th January.
Male Welfare Officer
Accommodation Officer
First Year Officer
In each one of these positions you are part of a team committed to event organisation and to representation of student interests in College. Please also note that the positions are available for Lent term only, as we launch the General Election in March. However, this opportunity might lead you to consider a bigger role in the next committee.
Below you will find more detail on what you could be doing according to our experience. This is just a broad guideline and by no means an imposition or restriction.
The by-elections will start on the 15th of January and run online for 3 consecutive days. Please submit all applications and manifestos to mcr-secretary@clare.cam.ac.uk
We look forward to receiving your nominations and manifestos by Friday 8th January.
Happy Holidays to all of you!
Anne

Male Welfare: As part of the welfare team you are representing student welfare issues at the College’s Welfare Committee. You may also be working with the Welfare Team (Dafni and Isobel) on drafting policies of confidentiality and you may get involved in the organisation of yoga classes and other welfare events. There are almost no limits to what we can do to improve student welfare!
Accommodation Officer: You will represent the MCR at the College Estate Committee, where students and Fellows negotiate the redevelopment of St Regis. You may also be the first point of contact if students face difficulties living in College Accommodation.
First Year Officer: The first year officer is ideally a Masters or first-year Phd student who understands the issues of first-year’s in Cambridge. You may be a person of trust to younger Graduates and you could be organising events for them. Again, there are no limits to your creativity.

Male Welfare
- Bennett Ostdiek
As someone who has benefited tremendously from MCR events, I am asking for the opportunity to join the Welfare team so that I can help it continue to serve the MCR community. I want to be MCR Male Welfare Officer so that I can put on Welfare events for you. In particular, I would like to continue yoga nights and, if people are interested, I would like to bring back free massages during exam time. I firmly believe that I am the most qualified candidate for this position – mainly because I am the only person who has gone to every single yoga night in the MCR. Vote for me!
First Year Officer
- Jing Jin
I’d like to apply for the position of First Year Officer. I am doing a one-year MPhil course in Polar Studies, focusing on Arctic oil development. I have been active in the MCR – attending meetings, social events, and welfare events, as well as working at the bar. I spend a lot of time in the buttery and MCR and have gotten to know many of the master’s students and first-year PhDs. I have experience organizing events and would be ready to solicit ideas and plan events. I would also solicit feedback on the MCR in person and through e-mail to address first-years’ concerns. Overall, I’m excited to make the first year a great start for PhD students and an absolute blast for master’s students.
